The hybrid workshop From Unit Cost to Price Setting: The key to your business sustainability was successfully held, bringing together around 60 participants, with approximately 20 attending in person and 40 joining online. The strong turnout reflected keen interest from CUHK members and practitioners working in knowledge transfer, social enterprises, and impact-driven initiatives.
The session was highly engaging and interactive, encouraging participants to actively reflect on their own services and business models. Through case studies, guided exercises, and group discussions, participants explored how to identify and calculate unit costs, distinguish between fixed and variable costs, and translate cost structures into informed and realistic pricing decisions.
Mr Timothy Ma, MH, JP, drew on his extensive experience in social innovation sector to illustrate how pricing is not merely a financial decision, but a strategic tool to balance financial sustainability, affordability, and social impact. Participants were prompted to critically examine common pricing assumptions, understand market and user sensitivity, and consider different pricing approaches suitable for social and knowledge-based services.
The workshop also highlighted practical frameworks for reviewing cost structures, optimising resource use, and setting prices that support long-term sustainability, which are particularly relevant in the context of tightening resources and funding uncertainties. The lively exchanges between participants further enriched the learning experience.
Overall, the workshop provided actionable insights, practical tools, and fresh perspectives, equipping participants to make more informed pricing decisions and strengthen the sustainability of their ventures.
