Coral Connects: Enhancing Ocean Literacy in Hong Kong through Multimedia Learning

Global warming, primarily fuelled by human-induced carbon emissions, is causing a significant decline in coral populations across the globe. This decline is not merely a localised issue but also contributing to a broader biodiversity crisis that affects numerous marine species that depend on coral reefs for their habitat. Despite the severity of these impacts, public awareness and understanding of these critical issues remain alarmingly low. This lack of awareness prevents individuals from making informed decisions regarding global climate change and its consequences, thereby, hindering the adoption of more environmentally friendly lifestyles and choices that could help mitigate these effects.
We will produce a series of engaging videos, including animated infographics, VR360 videos, and live-action videos, all supported by our research efforts in CUHK. These resources are designed to simplify complex scientific concepts through visually appealing animations. For example, VR360 videos allow audiences to virtually explore Hong Kong's underwater world and scientific survey, making diving accessible to those who are unable to dive. Animated infographics and live-action videos will showcase our current research and achievements. These resources aim to enhance scientific communication and engagement by presenting intricate scientific ideas in an easily understandable format. With the supplementary teaching materials and workshops for educators, the project also aims to further enrich the learning experience and make learning more accessible and engaging for a broader audience.
Freely accessible online videos are expected to reach 4,000 viewers. Customised printed teaching materials will supplement the videos by providing additional information, aiding educators in developing their pedagogy, and are expected to be used by 100 teachers or educators. Training workshops, anticipating a participation of 30 teachers and educators, will be offered to demonstrate how to effectively use the videos and teaching materials, providing in-depth knowledge on the topic. All these activities and resources aim to increase participants' knowledge levels and empower them to integrate the topic into their lessons.
